An American Airlines plane experiencing an engine issue landed safely at Mineta San Jose International Airport shortly after takeoff Monday morning, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

American Airlines Flight 2049, an Airbus 320 heading for Phoenix, landed at 11:04 a.m. and taxied safely to its gate to be inspected, FAA and airport officials said.

"Everything went fine and normal until we got up into the air," passenger Thomas Wagner said. "It actually sounded like it was going over speed bumps. The right side motor was going out."

Nate Wilke, who lives near the airport, was working at home when he said he heard repetitive banging noises. When we went outside and looked up, he said he saw flames coming out of the plane's right engine.
