Millions of families could soon be receiving financial relief as the Biden administration unveils the American Families Plan. The package includes assistance in paid family leave, tax cuts, health care, free education and setting aside $225 billion for child care.

The City of Sacramento is expecting an estimated $121 million in funds from the federal government, but that money is separate from the American Families Plan.

Councilmember Eric Guerra says the city is already discussing the budget and distribution plan.

The Biden administration says that investing in high-quality early childhood programs for low-income children will result in a boost in child academic and economic performance over time.

This funding would help families pay for child care based on their income -- meaning, low- and middle-income families would not have to pay more than 7% of their income on child care.

"Latino families and communities of color who do not have access to child care are not going to be able to get back to recovery if we don't make this happen. Manuel Buenrostro, an advocate and policy associate with Californians Together, says that Sacramento County has a high number of children who depend on school for meals and other services that have contributed to learning disparities.

The plan also invests in child care workers, raising the minimum wage to $15 for early childhood staff -- who according to a Berkeley study, are among the most underpaid workers in the country, and a great number of these employees depend on public income support programs.
