A Sacramento woman asked, "what is one thing you need but cannot afford right now?"

For Stephen and Adam Greyeyes, the Christmas they had hoped for almost didn't happen this year.

"I was sad a little bit. I was like, I'm not going to have enough money," Stephen said.

The couple is barely scraping by on Social Security disability benefits while caring for Stephen's disabled brother and several pets. The family hoped for a Christmas tree, but getting one would have cost more than they could afford.

"I know it's hard and a lot of people are struggling," said Cynthia Barajas when asked why she decided to make the now-viral post to the online social community, Nextdoor.

Her post asked, "what is one thing you need but cannot afford right now?"

She encouraged people to comment on her question and respond with what they might need or be able to offer to others. The post has since generated over 1,000 comments and over 200 likes.

"When I see it blowing up, I was surprised," laughed Barajas.

Responses poured in, with people asking for gift cards and gas money. Several neighbors offered a toaster oven and other appliances to a woman whose stove had been broken since Thanksgiving.

One neighbor, Kathleen Fraser, donated clothes, shoes, jackets, sweaters, games, toys, blankets, board games, toilet paper, a humidifier, and even medical equipment she had at home.

She said she had to nurse herself back to health after a car accident so she has a lot of compassion for people who have been through hard times.

She donated her kid’s old Barbie house and the person who took it sent her a photo of her kids playing with it.

Another neighbor offered free welding, dog training and American Sign Language lessons.

Someone else asked for a day off from caring for her mother with dementia, and a neighbor responded that they had the experience for that.

One of those involved in the thread brought the Greyeyes their Christmas tree.

"This is the best Christmas I could ever be thankful for," Stephen said.

Barajas says she's thankful her post got the response it did. It is still receiving comments.

"Feels good, actually. Just knowing, like, we have a lot of nice people out there still, even with the COVID," she said.
