Families with Sacramento City Schools got a shock this week. A parent said when his child logged onto their Zoom classroom on Thursday morning, pornographic photos popped up on the computer screen.

This is an issue that families reported experiencing with Placer and Sutter County schools last month as well.

Sacramento City Unified School District spokesperson Tara Gallegos said Friday the district is aware of the issue and taking appropriate action.

In a statement, Gallegos said in part: “The district will take appropriate action to hold anyone who misuses technology accountable, including appropriate disciplinary action.”

Richter said parents should make sure to patch, or update the operating systems, of any devices that their children use.

According to the school district, most of the issues they have seen stem from people sharing login information and people allowing others into classrooms who shouldn’t be there.

Richter weighed in, saying, “The key is to really think about what you’re sharing on social media and what you’re doing to practice good data hygiene.”

The district added that since students are using district Zoom accounts, school officials are able to investigate issues by monitoring login history.

A Zoom spokesperson sent KCRA this statement on Friday:
