A Union Pacific train was heading north through downtown, near Lodi Avenue, around 8:45 p.m. -- approaching the spot where the man was trapped.
The man’s wheelchair got stuck on the tracks before the arms of the railroad crossing came down. It is unclear how long the 66-year-old man was stuck on the railroad tracks.
Lodi police officer Erika Urrea was on patrol in the area and saw the railroad crossing arms coming down. She quickly got out of her patrol car and ran to the man.
According to body camera video, Urrea reached the man, unbuckled him from the wheelchair and pulled him to safety. Both fell to the ground just as the train whizzed by.
It was such a close call that the man’s leg was hit by the passing train. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive, police said.
“Officer Urrea was just in the area. She’s willing to help, and what she did was very heroic,” Lodi Police Department spokesperson Melita Kautz said. “She prevented a tragedy and she saved a man’s life. She’s very humble in doing so."
The police department also said on Facebook, "Officer Urrea risked her own life to save another… We are extremely proud of Officer Erika Urrea and her heroism.”
