（KCRA）A Woodland high school teacher is rejoicing at the fact her school district is moving toward a sense of normalcy and getting students back into classrooms.

Jen Drewek Shilen hasn't taught in-person since March of last year.

"This past year of having that piece taken away from us due to the spread of the COVID virus has been a hardship on us professionally, and a hardship on our students," Shilen, a world history teacher, said.

Also serving as president of the Woodland Education Association, Shilen has been at the negotiating table working to figure out a safe way to get students and teachers back into classrooms while following COVID-19 safety protocols.

The solution agreed upon is called concurrent teaching.

"The hybrid model will allow us to have fewer people in each classroom at one time," Shilen explained.

Students in grades seven through 12 will have the option to come back into the classroom or continue learning from home online. Educators will be in the classroom.

Even though students are in two separate places, they will be experiencing the same instruction, with the same teacher, at the same time.

However, not all learning models are without challenge, as Shilen explained the setbacks with this hybrid model.

"Some people are really apprehensive about the idea that they might be directed to do that broadcast model of teaching to a screen and in-person at the same time and feeling like that's kind of unfair to both groups because neither group is getting the best of what the teacher has to offer when their attention is divided like that. That is why we're hopeful that some more creative options can be made available to instructors to treat their students in small groups and to get creative about how students can interact with one another even though some people are in person and some people are at home," Shilen responded.

Shilen also said some of the staff who work with middle school students are a bit more apprehensive about how much they can trust their students to interact with one another appropriately, especially through online communication.

It still remains to be seen how many parents and teachers will take advantage of in-person school. Woodland Joint Unified School District is in the process of surveying parents and staff.

“No one wants to be in-person in the classroom more than teachers," Shilen said. "We know that we can do our best work with our students when we can be in person with them.”

The back-to-school plan for elementary is still in the works.
