Big announcement: World's Strongest Man coming to Sacramento

Almost a year after announcing the Ironman Triathlon is coming to Sacramento this fall, Visit Sacramento's Sports Commission announced another worldwide event has chosen the Capital City.

The World's Strongest Man competition announced a three-year deal with Visit Sacramento to hold the event here beginning this summer.

The competition, which tests athletes in various feats of strength to determine who is strongest, will be broadcast on television. Previous events have captured audiences of 500 million households, according to IMG, producers of World's Strongest Man.

"We love bringing the competition to new places, and with the city's rich history, world-class facilities, and beautiful waterfront, it's the perfect fit," said Rebecca Levin, IMG's vice president of media.

One big question, though. How is this possible during a pandemic?

"We worked with Sacramento County's Public Health Department and, because this is an outside event, they felt it could be done safely," said Mike Testa, president and CEO of Visit Sacramento.

The exact locations for this summer's event, taking place June 15-20, are still to be determined. Organizers haven't yet made a determination on fans/spectators — that decision will be made closer to the event date and based on guidance from public health officials, according to Visit Sacramento.
