A born-and-raised Sacramentan is taking his love and knowledge of the city to the realm of superheroes with a comic series highlighting what makes the area unique.

Brent Trayce Sands, creator of Impound Comics, believes Sacramento — particularly its MMA scene — isn't getting the attention it deserves. In comes superhero Impound, a single father and struggling MMA fighter who one day gains superpowers, which the character sees as his big break.

Outside of mixed martial arts, the comic book series will also draw from some of Sacramento's actual history. Sands said there will be landmarks, businesses and actual events that people local to the area would recognize instantly.

For example, images released by Impound Comics show the Golden 1 Center and the very notable Jeff Koons piece right by it, the buildings that make up Capitol Mall downtown, the Tower Bridge in the distance during an iconic golden hour sunset, and the several businesses that comprise K Street.

The series will also feature major fight scenes at some of these landmarks, Sands said. One such image teased shows Impound fighting a villain in Old Sacramento.

So far, two books have been released: "The Origin of Impound #1" and "Seraph #1." While the first book focused heavily on introduction, Sands said the second one, which he recently announced was released, begins around the time of the police custody death of George Floyd.

"At some point, there's gonna be rioting," Sands said. "You'll see Kicx Unlimited or something like that being looted ... I'm trying to make the world more realistic that way — make it with current events."

Sands attended Natomas High School and Sacramento State. He works with local music artists and created Impound Comics after having more time on his hands as a result of the novel coronavirus.

A huge inspiration for the comic series comes from another Black superhero: Black Panther, a movie directed by Ryan Coogler, another Sac State alumni. Sands said he's drawn the Wakandan royal in his own time prior to the pandemic, but felt the large inspiration to create a localized hero that upholds the principles he believes King T'Challa represented.

"Black Panther had a responsibility to like, a minority community to empower it, and I thought that was dope that it was way more than a comic book movie," Sands said.

Sands said that if his comic series got to the point where it could be adapted into a movie that Coogler, a fellow Sac State alum, would be the one to adapt it.

There are currently two books out in the series, and also a mobile game that does not spoil the plot of the comics.
