Tahoe wildlife officials work to tag bears, then scare them into safety

Wildlife officials in the Lake Tahoe Basin are trying out a new strategy to track bears in the area, while also hoping to keep them away from humans.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and California State Parks began a collaborative effort this week to tag as many bears as they possibly can in the Tahoe Basin.

The bears are captured and tagged, and wildlife officials then collect genetic samples from the bears.

After samples are collected, the bears are released to officials who are yelling at them, honking horns and making as much sound as possible — in order to scare the bears to safety. Wildlife officials hope the commotion they create associates humans with a negative experience.

Genetic samples collected will then be put into a database that officials say will be useful if a bear breaks into a car or home, as they can match the DNA with a bear that has been tagged.
