ROSEVILLE, Calif — The Roseville Police Department is investigating a deadly shooting at a hotel near Topgolf that happened on Friday morning.

According to a Facebook post by the Roseville Police Department, officers received calls for a shooting just before 8 a.m. Friday, Sept. 18. The post says the shooting happened in a hotel along the 1900 block of Freedom Way. As of 11 a.m., police tape surrounded the Home2 Suites By Hilton hotel.

It wasn't even 8 in the morning when Courtney Vaterlaus, a hotel guest, knew something was terribly wrong.

"I was asleep and then all of the sudden I heard maybe seven shots go off," Vaterlaus said. "And then we heard someone yell 'Call 911!'"

Her 15-year-old sister, Kyla Schuette, in the same room, jumped into action.

"I basically just went straight to my school tactics of what I was taught in school and just closed the blinds, made sure everything was quiet, had my mom lock the door since she is the oldest person in the room, and me and my sister dropped to the floor in between the beds," Schuette said.

This Bella Vista High School sophomore said she never thought she would ever need the active-shooter training given to her at school.

"Basically what was going through my mind was mainly protecting myself and people around me," she said.

Just outside of their hotel room, police say one person was shot and killed and the suspect took off in a car before law enforcement could get there. At this time, they're still working to figure out how the suspect and victim knew each other, if at all.

"We can say that it does not appear to be a random act of violence," said Rob Baquera, a spokesman for the Roseville Police Department.

Still, they say, this kind of violence isn't normal for the area as this is only the third homicide of the year, nine months in.

Police say they are working to use the surveillance camera footage from the hotel and surrounding businesses to help track down the suspect, but at this time, they are not releasing any other information.

Police do not currently have a suspect in custody and expect to be at the scene for several hours. The hotel and businesses in the area are still open.
