周三家长抗议！Rocklin、Elk Grove家庭反对远程教育！
On Wednesday, dozens of Rocklin parents and students made their voices heard at a protest ahead of the evening school board meeting. Families wanted district leaders to know that they want their children back in the classroom.

Lewis Callahan’s daughter is in first grade. While distance learning has been difficult for him and his wife who work full-time, the experience has been even more stressful for his daughter.

“She’s only getting 20% of the efficiency of learning online versus in the classroom. And she has great teachers. We love them. But just the methodology for a child that small, it just doesn’t work,” Callahan said.

According to Placer County Health, schools in the county have the option to reopen in-person. The county got the green light from the state starting Sept. 1.

Rocklin Unified School District originally planned to return to campus on Sept. 8, but then confusion from the school district and health department about COVID testing requirements caused students to shift to full distance learning.

“All the other schools around here, charter schools, private schools, they’re about to open. But RUSD can’t seem to figure out how to open,” said parent Denise Magnuson. “This newness of being in front of the computer is over. The kids are staring off. I’m catching them on YouTube. We’re constantly having to monitor what they’re paying attention to. So it’s hard for them to keep their attention span as well keep a good tab on how well they’re doing.”

Parents like Megan Nasman said virtual classes have proven to be particularly challenging for students like her special needs son.

“Distance learning is not appropriate according to Special Ed law. It’s not appropriate for him. And he’s losing all kinds of grounds,” Nasman said. “A real education is in person, not on a screen.”

On Wednesday, Rocklin Unified School District issued this statement:

“The Rocklin Unified School District’s goal is to return students to campus as soon as we safely can. The safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority. We are working collaboratively with Placer County Public Health, Placer County Office of Education as well as other local and state officials towards a safe reopening of our schools and return to on-campus learning. We understand the frustration and confusion that some of our families are experiencing, as the situation is constantly evolving. However, RUSD has always and plans to continue following local and state public health guidelines and recommendations in order to protect the safety of our staff, students, their families and the community as a whole.”

While no date has been set on when students will return to class, the Placer County Office of Education plans to have more updates this week.

Meanwhile, families in Elk Grove are feeling the struggles of distance learning too.

“These kids aren’t made to sit in front of computer screens for four hours trying to listen,” said parent Kevin Bitnoff. “My daughters are saying, ‘I’ve got headaches. My eyes hurt. It’s really hard to listen.’”

With four daughters all under 10 years old, Bitnoff said virtual learning is tough on the whole family which is why he wants students to be able to return to the classroom at least part-time. He plans to attend a rally on Thursday organized by Congressional candidate Buzz Patterson.

“Like anything in America, we should have an option to choose. Right now, we don’t,” Bitnoff said.

Elk Grove Unified School District originally planned to offer families a hybrid option to return to the classroom. But that changed when Gov. Gavin Newsom announced over the summer that schools would have to stick with distance learning in counties where COVID-19 continued to spread.

“That’s not fair. He doesn’t know Elk Grove like we do. So that is our goal is to take power back like it should be,” Bitnoff said. “Our school district can make an appeal to Governor Newsom to at least open up kindergarten through sixth grade. We feel like right now that everyone’s waiting and no one is taking a stand. That is our goal.”

Elk Grove Unified School District said in a statement on Wednesday: “We are open to address any concerns raised by our parents about services they or their children are receiving.”

The district has not submitted a waiver to the county requesting schools reopen in person.
