The fire started Monday morning in the South Yuba River canyon off Jones Bar Road, northwest of Nevada City.

Officials expanded evacuations when the fire began moving toward Nevada City, Cal Fire said.

A temporary evacuation center was set up at Ready Springs School, located on Spencerville Road in Penn Valley. Animals can be taken to the Nevada County Fairgrounds.
