Crowds of people were enjoying the sunshine at Dolores Park in San Francisco on Saturday, but some failed to respect the social distancing circles painted in chalk on the grass.

The 6-foot chalk circles were first painted back in May, in an attempt to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

KPIX-5 reports that some people spilled outside or overcrowded the circles, and not everyone was following the requirement to wear a facial covering.

“From our perspective, while people, I think, are starting to wear the masks more often, we’re still not seeing enough social distancing out there,” Dr. David Rubin, lead investigator and professor of Pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, told KCBS Radio. “People would be surprised at the amount of physical distancing that needs to happen, in addition to masking, in order to really degrade your case counts.”

Dr. Rubin said that a lack of consistency from state and federal governments on coronavirus related closures and mandates has created problems for local efforts during the summer season, as people begin to travel more.

“We watched the spread up the 1-5 earlier in the summer season in California, but lacking some level of national standards, and with travelers moving around in summertime, you lose efficacy for locally driven efforts,” Dr. Ruben said.
