Caltrans is warning drivers to expect delays as they travel along a stretch of Interstate 5 in South Sacramento. Extended lane closures are in effect, now through 5 a.m. Monday.

The closures are part of the FixSac5 highway project. The weekend construction work involves closing two lanes on both the northbound and southbound sides of the highway.

This weekend the work will happen on a stretch of I-5 between the Elk Grove area and South Sacramento.

No ramp closures are associated with this weekend's work.

Crews are drilling and removing large sections of concrete during this closure, which is the third of 16 extended lane closures Caltrans has slated from now through the next several months.

Work will resume on the FixSac5 project during the weekends of July 10, July 17 and July 24. No highway construction is set for the Independence Day holiday weekend.

"We're going to try to get as much work done as possible because next weekend is the Fourth of July weekend and we're going to try to have all lanes available," said Angela DaPrato, Caltrans Public Information Officer. "Even though we have COVID-19 going on, we're expecting heavy volumes of traffic."

Caltrans requests that drivers stay alert for heavy equipment moving around the construction zone, and to watch their speeds.

"We have a lot of workers out there and we want to make sure they get home to their families," said DaPrato.
