From Lodi to Roseville, from Marysville to Davis, weekend Black Lives Matter protests filled the streets of smaller, Northern California communities with the goal of making a big impact.

“I really wanted this event to be a sort of a catalyst and rallying point for us,” said Dillan Horton, organizer of the Davis March for Justice. “I really do think we have a big opportunity to do something substantial here.”

As chair of the city’s Police Accountability Commission, Horton feels it’s important for smaller towns to hold big rallies in effort to spark conversations about the policing reform millions of demonstrators across the country are calling for, as Horton put it, “...really solidifying a pattern, a set of proposals and some energy for change in the community.”

Protesters are also using gatherings as a way to process grief over lost lives.

Kate Mellon Anibaba created what she calls Solidarity Space at Central Park in Davis. It’s a temporary memorial she built to help her husband, who is part of Davis’ Black community, cope with the depression he experienced after the death of George Floyd.

“Wanting him to have a space to mourn... to process, I created these portraits and took this space in Central Park for the folks that needed it," said Mellon Anibaba. “It’s kind of turned into this gathering space for solidarity and to lift up the names of those who’ve been killed by police.”

Mellon Anibaba’s husband, Sule, explained why memorials like the Solidarity Space are needed in small towns and major metropolitan areas alike.
