(KCRA)Sacramento County health officials warn RSV and flu cases on the rise in region
Northern California health officials said on Wednesday that they are reporting an uptick in both RSV cases and the flu in the region.
"We are also seeing an uptick in higher than average daily census for this time of year and seeing the complications of RSV," Dr. Zoey Goore, with Kaiser Permanente, said on Wednesday in a news conference with medical experts across Sacramento County. "We're also seeing some pretty significant complications of the flu."
RSV, or respiratory syncytial virus, is spiking across the country.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says most kids catch RSV at some point before they turn two years old.
"Virtually every child gets RSV between zero and three years of age, and if we think of the last two and a half years of mitigation efforts in place we saw record-low numbers of RSV, influenza and other respiratory viruses," said Dr. Dean Blumberg, with UC Davis Health.
Symptoms may look like a common cold and include runny nose, decreased appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing. They typically last a week or two and clear up with rest and fluids.
But in some children, especially young infants, RSV can be dangerous, leading to dehydration, breathing trouble and more serious illnesses such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia.
Health officials said there is a significant increase in ER visits and hospital admissions with children who have RSV. However, Blumberg did say they are not seeing the same levels that the East Coast is seeing where there aren't enough hospital beds for children.
He warned that things can "change quickly."
"We have been watching this progression coming from the East Coast for several weeks now and have put a lot of practices in place in anticipation," said Dr. Craig Swanson, with Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento Children’s Center.
Doctors representing different health systems across Northern California all echoed that they are working to increase capacity at all the hospitals in the region to take care of the children through this time.
"I can't give you a specific number for the increase in admissions, but we are seeing definitely more consults, definitely more patient admissions. Dignity (Health) and Mercy San Juan are prepared to expand our pediatric beds that we currently have so we're doing the best we can to accommodate this increase that we're seeing," said Dr. Lindsey Demetral, with Mercy San Juan Medical Center Dignity Health.
RSV typically hits children the hardest who are aged six months old and younger due to lower immune system support. However, toddlers and kindergarten-aged children are the ones needing more respiratory support at the moment, Demetral said.
She said that is probably because toddlers weren't being exposed to RSV with children not in school, more people wearing masks, and being more vigilant with COVID-19.
"That means that all those children, they missed out on getting RSV for the first time and so these older toddlers are getting RSV and I think that's what's driving some of the older children to go to the hospital with complications," Blumberg said.
Health officials warned that children with asthma are at greater risk of seeing complications from RSV.
Flu cases also up across the country
So far this season, there have been an estimated 1.6 million flu illnesses and 13,000 hospitalizations. Flu activity is most intense in some of the areas where RSV is fading, including the Southeast, according to CDC data.
Health officials urge people to get their flu vaccine now, ahead of the usually busy sick season.
"All of the children that have been hospitalized with complications from the flu did not have their flu vaccine yet this year," Goore said.
There is not yet a vaccine against RSV.
