Around 100 students and community members were protesting a controversial speaker who was being hosted at the university by the conservative and liberation organization "Turning Point USA," which has a chapter on campus.

According to UC Davis TPUSA Chapter Vice President Luke Shalz, Stephen Davis was set to speak at the organization's event. Davis identifies online as the "MAGA Hulk."

Shalz and officials with UC Davis said some protestors were using barriers to hit the glass windows of the UC Davis Conference Center.

Will Alpers, a recent UC Davis graduate who was protesting in solidarity with students, said the violence began when people who appeared to be " roud Boys" members arrived on campus.

Officials with UC Davis denied an interview request Wednesday by KCRA, but sent a statement, saying in part:

That statement also said UC Davis police were not deployed to the incident, and that no UC Davis staff member used pepper spray.

KCRA 3 asked why police were not sent to the scene even though students and off-campus individuals were injured. The university said the UC Davis Police Department followed protocol and worked with Student Affairs to monitor the protest. Officers were on standby when fighting broke out but did not act because "the situation de-escalated on its own, eliminating the need for the police to engage."

The Proud Boys are a right-wing extremist group that is considered primarily violent, misogynistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and anti-immigration, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
