Thursday has been a busy day for the south Sacramento convenience store that sold one of two winning Powerball tickets.

The jackpot is around a whopping $630 million, the seventh-largest jackpot in Powerball's history. And the ticket as of Thursday evening remains unclaimed.

A California State Lottery spokesperson said they're just as excited to find out who the winner is, adding that they've started doing outreach in Spanish to broaden the search for the winner.

"We never know if the person who won lives nearby. It can be somebody in the apartments across the street," Carolyn Becker with the California State Lottery said. There are 23,000 places where you can buy a lottery ticket in California, mostly in convenience stores.

The 7-Eleven store at 6591 Wyndham Drive is also receiving a $1 million bonus. The owner hopes one of his frequent customers bought the winning ticket.

"Anytime it goes to anyone in this neighborhood, I'm very happy for them. I'm glad it was my store and it was hopefully one of my regular customers. I'm very excited for them," franchise store owner Harprie Dhillon said.

Throughout the day, many other residents also showed up to test their luck. And while it's a good start to the new year for the winners, it's also a good day for public schools across the state.

"The money is divided up among public schools in every county, based on the same formula that schools get their federal money. Those attendance formulas, that's how lottery money is divided up, too," Becker said.

The California State Lottery doesn't track that money distribution or how it's spent.

The winner has one year to claim their part of the prize. If the money isn't claimed in one year, the lump sum amount, which is approximately $225 million, will go to public schools.

The state lottery also added that the winner doesn't have to live here or be a U.S. citizen to play or win.

An undocumented Californian could file the same claim form, the only difference is that they would pay a little more in federal taxes and would have to provide an ITIN number for tax purposes.
