Sacramento school district prepares as kids may soon get COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine

The Sacramento City Unified School District said it will be ready if the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine is approved for children 5 to 11 years old.

"We’re really excited to see this possibility for our students," said Victoria Flores, director of student support and health services at SCUSD.

One mother, Kylie Paris-Salb, said she will feel a lot better when her children can get the COVID-19 vaccine. She has a 5-year-old daughter in kindergarten and a 7-year-old son in the 2nd grade.

Paris-Salb hopes more people, including adults, will get the vaccine, confident in the vaccine's efficacy after going through trials.

"As soon as it's approved, they will both be getting the vaccine. My son is immunocompromised," Paris-Salb said.

Pfizer announced this week that its clinical trials show the vaccine is safe and effective for children 5 to 11 years old. The vaccine for younger children would be two smaller-sized doses than for people who are ages 12 and up, and it could get approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as soon as next month. With that in mind, SCUSD is planning ahead.

"We would like to take clinics out to our schools," Flores said. "We know that's important. We did that over the summer with our high schools and so we'd like to also take those out to maybe some of our elementaries and so we’ll work with the county, figure out where they’re having clinics so then we can also partner and pair where maybe there’s still some need."

KCRA 3 spoke with one parent who said he did not feel comfortable with the idea of vaccinating children as young as 5 years old, and we asked the district if it is expecting to see more parents who are hesitant when it comes to younger children compared to those ages 12 and up.

For now, the district is hosting weekly vaccine clinics on Wednesdays from 5-7 p.m. at district headquarters at 5735 47th Ave. in Sacramento for those 12 years and older. SCUSD said it's had about 40 clinics so far, administering roughly 23,000 shots.
