（KCRA）More than year after pandemic, Old Town Elk Grove on track to become next local hotspot

Big changes are coming to Old Town Elk Grove.
埃尔克格罗夫老城区正在发生巨大的变化。
City officials say they are on track to debut a major project in just a matter of weeks that will drive more commerce to the area.

Construction is nearing completion on Old Town Plaza, a former train depot turned community gathering space for people in the area. City officials plan to use it as an event venue as well for food trucks and concerts.

"[We wanted] to create a sense of place in the community," explained senior civil engineer Kristin Parsons, who oversees both the Old Town Plaza and Railroad Street Improvement projects. "A welcoming and inviting space that people wanted to spend time in, whether they come down and eat at the restaurants, [or] spend time at the shops."

The $12 million project is the latest effort by city leaders to turn Elk Grove into a destination location.

"Our residents overwhelmingly have wanted to see new entertainment districts, new restaurants, new vitality, as spaces for people to gather," said Mayor Bobbie Singh-Allen. "Revitalizing Old Town has not only been a priority not only for myself but for city council as well."

Singh-Allen said that funding for the project was allocated from previous years, before the pandemic.

The mainly female-led construction project did not come without challenges. Workers broke ground in June 2020, in the middle of the pandemic.

"We brought in drainage, sewage and gas, undergrounded overhead utilities," Parsons said. "There was a lot of stuff to get into the streets and not enough space. All the roadway improvements... previous conditions were very narrow [and] not even wide enough for two lanes of traffic. [There were] potholes; lack of utilities."

Still, Parsons is pleased with the speedy progress that her team been made. The plaza is set to open to the public on July 21, with a celebration featuring local food trucks.

Just about a block away from the plaza, construction continues at 9676 Railroad Street. The century-old grape wine warehouse is being transformed into a modern-day taproom and restaurant by the owners of Turlock's Dust Bowl Brewing.

Prior to signing up for the Railroad Street location, Brett Honoré says he'd been searching for three years for an optimal site to expand his business to.

"Elk Grove is a fantastic community, we relate to the people," said Honoré. "It's also close to downtown Sac and other Sacramento markets."

On top of the spacious indoor lounge space, Honoré says he plans to open up an expansive patio outdoors. Customers will be able to enjoy 30 taps and upscale pub food. The business owner says he's happy with his partnership with the city so far.

"They've really set us up for success and we're hoping to continue that," Honoré said.
