Five years after a Mission District slaying left two people living in a wooden box dead, San Francisco police on Monday increased the reward for information leading to the shooter’s arrest to $75,000 — triple the original amount offered.

Lindsay McCollum and Eddie “Tennessee” Tate were living in an encampment at 16th and Shotwell streets in December 2016 when two gunmen approached the pair’s handmade shelter, opened fire and fled.

Eyewitnesses watched for minutes as McCollum, 27, exited the wooden box, removed her clothes and stumbled into the street, where she bled to death. Tate, 51, died in the box.

The shooting stunned the city, but police investigators found few leads and struggled to locate transient emcampment residents who knew Tate and McCollum.

Frustrated by the stalled investigation, McCollum’s parents, Mike and Carrie McCollum of Tennessee, offered a $5,000 reward in August 2018 for tips leading to a conviction of their daughter’s killer. Two months later, under pressure from the McCollums, the Police Department offered an additional $25,000 for leads.

On Monday, that amount increased to $75,000 when police issued a fresh wanted poster featuring a new composite sketch of a mustached person of interest.

Tate, a roaming handyman, and McCollum, who had studied to be a veterinarian, were not a couple. They were living in the box purely for shelter, friends and family said. Both struggled with heroin addiction.
