Multiple protests in downtown were part of National Day Against Police Terror

Sacramento community activists hosted several events Thursday night for the National Day Against Police Terror.

"This is the day we reflect on the systematic ways that terror is enforced on our communities," said Leia Schenk, founder of Empact.

The 25th National Day Against Police Terror was amplified against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic and the high-profile killings of multiple Black people across the U.S. at that hands of law enforcement.

"We don't want to have to say another name. Every death is an absolute tragedy," said Steve Sander, an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation Sacramento.

Sander said demonstrators chose to host multiple events this year, involving people of different genders, ages and races across the downtown area to cover the nuanced topic of police brutality.

"It's important to realize how pervasive police terror is, especially in low-income and minority communities," he added.

"The call to action is always to stop killing us," Schenk said. "We want you to stop killing us so then we don't have to be out here. We want you to understand that Black Lives Matter."

Demonstrators from all walks of life raised their voices against the oppression and discrimination they said has gone on for far too long.

"We are calling for an end to police violence and to remember the names of those we've lost constantly to queerphobic, transphobic and homophobic violence," said Irma Syed of Still Here, a group serving the Sacramento transgender community. "We have to be here to stand up for ourselves."

Empact chose to take a unique approach to their demonstration, leading protestors to various city buildings involved in the incarceration process, from the Sacramento County Superior courthouse to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. The group then opened the floor to speakers who shared their personal experiences with racism, police brutality and the trauma of surviving mass incarceration.

"This is a not a moment, it’s a movement," Schenk said. "In order for us to ever get justice, there has to be accountability for one’s actions."

Later Thursday night, dozens of people gathered at Cesar Chavez Plaza for a protest organized by Sactivists before marching through downtown as part of the National Day Against Police Terror. The group traveled from the park to the Sacramento County Jail to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office.

Schenk also emphasized the importance of voting this election season.

"That’s how you get your message across," she said. "The average citizen like you and I, we have to make our presence known. We have to be in the Capitol, we gotta be in City Hall. We gotta be a part of these propositions."
