(KCRA3)Sept. 16 marks ‘916 Day’ in Sacramento. It is an idea city officials came up with in 2018 to encourage people to share what they love about Sacramento.
9月16日是萨克拉门托的“916日”。这是市政官员在2018年提出的一个想法，目的是鼓励人们分享他们对萨克拉门托的喜爱。
On Wednesday, the owners of Nash & Proper celebrated 916 Day by throwing the grand opening of their new brick and mortar restaurant on K Street. A line of hungry customers stretched down the block.

“916 Day! Yeah!” said Chef Cecil Rhodes. “Now our anniversary is going to be on 9-16 representing Sactown.”

Owners Cecil Rhodes and Jake Bombard started their Nashville-inspired hot chicken business in a now popular food truck. This week, they opened their first permanent location after winning last year’s ‘Calling all Dreamers’ competition. The competition run by the Downtown Sacramento Partnership awards winners with about $100,000 worth of services to expand business.

“I just want to thank Sacramento for having our back and always being here for us,” said Rhodes.

But as one door opens, another is closing for good. Just around the corner from Nash & Proper’s grand opening, Oblivion Comics & Coffee held a going out of business sale. Oblivion won the Dreamers business competition in 2016.

“This has probably been one of the most difficult experiences to be going through,” said Laura Benson.

Owners Laura Benson and Neil Estaris said they lost 75% of their clientele when the pandemic hit since most of their customers were state workers.

“It’s just hard with all the chips stacked against us to be able to move forward,” said Estaris. “It’s just tough to say goodbye to something that brought us all together.”

The coffee shop section of the store is already closed, but the comic book side will remain open for two more weeks for the closing out sale. On Wednesday, comic book lovers embraced their final moments in the store sifting through the Golden Age and Silver Age comics that never before hit the floor.

“Big loss for Sacramento,” said customer Evan Weathers. “Sacramento has lots of bars and restaurants, but things like this, this is rare.”

Surrounded by stories of superheroes, in reality the owners feel powerless to the pandemic but thankful for their fans.

“We have the best fan base we could have asked for, staff has been amazing. It’s like family to be honest,” said Estaris.

Benson said it may be goodbye for now, but who knows what the future holds.

“We are a store, we are a business, but ultimately what happened here was we created a community,” she said. “We can’t control viruses. And it’s very unfair to a lot of people and a lot of businesses for how we’ve had to adapt because of this pandemic. But at the same time we are also understanding of why we have to do certain things. At the end of the day, we just want to make sure that people are going to be safe and healthy.”

Nash & Proper and Oblivion Comics & Coffee are both winners of the Dreamers business competition. Since the contest started in 2013, there have been a total of seven winners. Now, four of those businesses have either closed down or can not open because of the pandemic, according to the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.

“This is a symbol of what today looks like. It’s an emotional time, there’s a lot of uncertainty,” said Downtown Sacramento Partnership spokeswoman Emilie Cameron. “This highlights why these businesses need customers.”

The Downtown Sacramento Partnership suspended this year’s competition. Instead, the organization is taking what funds it has received from sponsors to help previous winners. Cameron said they hope to restart the contest next year.
