(KCRA3)The Sacramento City Unified School District moved forward with plans to remove what it calls symbols of intolerance from campuses.

"Schools are where kids are going to learn those lessons. And if they see the name of someone who did terrible things on the front of their school or on their jerseys they are wearing, what lessons are they going to learn?" said William Burg, a historian documenting Sacramento and California history.

The school district plans to first rename three schools: Kit Carson International Academy, Sutter Middle School and Peter Burnett Elementary.

The people of California elected Peter Burnett to become the state's first governor in 1849.

"He opposed slavery in California because he did not want Black people to come to California," Burg said. "He also signed the foreign miner's tax, which charged Chinese miners a tax that European miners didn't have to pay."

"He was really racist," Burg said. "To the point where when he helped start the constitution for the state of Oregon, he said, 'Let’s put in a law that said, if you are Black, you cannot stay in the state of Oregon unless you subject yourself to public flogging.'"

Kit Carson was a frontiersman who came to the West as a trapper and killed many Indigenous people.

"He was involved in multiple wars against the Native American people of this country," Burg said. "So, there is a lot of their blood on his hands."

The school district said Thursday night the renaming of schools is part of the district's effort to dismantle racism from within the system.

"School names, structures and symbols that upholds a legacy of racism, oppression, and exclusion shall not be tolerated," the district said in a statement. "The names of our schools are a powerful symbol of our community values."

According to a staff report, the school board plans to allocate $100,000 to $150,000 per campus to remove the names. The board is now taking steps to form an advisory committee to start the renaming process.

"These are people we should know about, people who are going to be in our history books," said Burg of Sutter, Burnett and Carson. "What we shouldn't be doing is honoring them for things they did for what we would judge as war crimes today."
