(KCRA3)If you’re planning a last-minute escape from the heat and are looking for a place to rent in Lake Tahoe, beware of a common short-term rental scam that’s seeing an uptick in activity.
如果你正在计划逃离炎热的天气，准备在Tahoe,湖找地方租房子，要小心常见的短期租房骗局。
South Lake Tahoe Police Chief David Stevenson says, “It’s a fairly significant issue in our town, and it’s pretty devastating for families that put down three, four, five thousand dollars thinking they’re going to come to Tahoe and be ready to go into their rental.”

Instead, some tourists are finding the rental property they paid for was all part of a scam.

One Tahoe homeowner, who wants to remain unidentified, says it has happened three times just this summer with her rental home.

“There’s really not much stopping somebody from copying and pasting pictures they find on the internet and creating a fake Craigslist ad,” she said.

In some cases, families have traveled for hours to arrive and find the home they thought they rented is already occupied, and the contract is a fake.

“The house exists. It literally is a vacation rental … a legal vacation rental, but whoever is listing it on Craigslist has done that illegally, because they have nothing to do with the property whatsoever,” the homeowner said.

Craigslist has a page dedicated to avoiding scams. Much of their advice mirrors what the police department suggests, including making sure you can talk to a “live” person, and make sure you use a secured form of payment like a credit card. Requests for payment via gift cards or through email payment systems should raise a red flag.
