Original story: The city of Sacramento is set to lower speed limits at 24 different locations throughout the city.

On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on a proposal by the city’s traffic engineers to reduce the speed limit at the suggested sites.

The proposal comes as a part of the city’s larger Vision Zero campaign, according to city spokesperson Grace Nunez. The campaign aims “to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2027.”

The proposed reduction also represents a move by the city to adjust its speeds as to not allow the roadways to become designated as speed traps — or roadway sections where the speed limit is not justified by engineering and traffic surveys.

Areas designated as speed traps can make it more difficult for the city to enforce speeding violations. According to the city’s staff report, “evidence of a speeding violation based on a speed trap is inadmissible in court and may result in the inability to prosecute violators of the speed limit.”
