Caught on camera: Sacramento County auto shops hit by gas thieves

Auto shops in Sacramento County's Arden-Arcade area say people are siphoning gasoline out of parked cars, and one of the shop's surveillance cameras caught people in action.

At the intersection of El Sutton Lane and Fulton Avenue are several businesses that offer services including auto repairs, detailing and tires. Jeremiah Bethly, who owns 1st Choice Auto Repair, describes the area as "a very busy lane."

“It's a pandemic of theft," Bethly said.

Bethly, who said he was one of the first businesses in the area, said he recently noticed unusual activity: people approaching cars with gas canisters and gas caps left open at different hours of the day.

"It's dumbfounding to me why people would come along and try and siphon gas out of vehicles," Bethly said.

It’s happened to Bethly several times over the past month, and he said people have been going from lot to lot hitting all of the parked vehicles.

Julio Rodriguez of Rodriguez Custom Upholstery also saw signs of siphoning. He said he saw a tube used to siphon and one in a tank Wednesday morning.

He had found out his business was also hit Sunday.

“You see these guys stealing gas from my customer’s car and you can’t do anything,” Rodriguez said.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said it is investigating, but at this time does not believe the crimes to be organized. It has not seen an uptick in gasoline thefts.

Bethly hopes the suspects are found soon.

"I'm just losing more and more money," Bethly said.
