The California Capital Airshow will return to Mather Airport in Sacramento County this weekend for three days of events.

The United States Air Force Thunderbirds and Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will headline the air show. It’s the first time since 2018 that the Thunderbirds will be returning to Sacramento. F-35 Lightning II jet demonstration teams are also among those participating.

Organizers say to expect more than four hours of flying performances. No tickets will be sold onsite and capacity has been reduced by half for this year to allow for more space between people. You can buy tickets online here.

The air show kicks off Friday with a one-time “Afterburning’ Drive-In Airshow” event for this year that’s billed as “a tailgate party but with jets.” It will feature more than 25 military jets.

People are welcome to bring food, drinks, coolers, chairs and standard umbrellas but grills and alcohol aren’t allowed. Be advised that no food will be for sale at the event, but organizers recommend picking up take-out food at local restaurants while on your way to the airshow.

Drive-in tickets are good for up to six people per sedan, SUV or truck, and six kids are included in an adult’s general admission ticket. Organizers are making 2,000 tickets available for the event. Retired and active-duty military service members can buy tickets at a discount through the Beale and Travis ITT offices.

The airshow kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday with jets flying from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event also has STEM experiences for kids and large military aircraft on display like the C-5 Super Galaxy M and C-17 Globemaster II. People will be able to see the cockpits and meet pilots and crew from some of the aircraft on display.

For those buying general admission tickets, organizers encourage bringing a blanket or lawn chair to sit on since seating is not included.
