In an unusual spate of gray whale deaths, yet another animal has been found washed up around the San Francisco Bay, this time at Muir Beach on Thursday morning.

April marks the start of gray whales' northern migration, and so finding dead whales on the shores of the Bay is not unheard of, but four in nine days is an anomaly.

"It's concerning," says Giancarlo Rulli of the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. "The fact that we've responded to four dead gray whales ... is concerning."

The first was a 41-foot adult female gray whale that alarmed beachgoers at Crissy Field on March 31. That animal was towed to Angel Island for a necropsy. The cause of death was unclear — pathologists with the Marine Mammal Center found that the whale's condition was good, no illnesses were found, and in fact, the whale had a full stomach from a recent feeding, ruling out starvation or malnutrition.

The second, another adult female, was found Saturday at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve at Moss Beach. "That animal's cause of death, we suspect, was ship strike," Rulli says. "Our plan is to eventually head back out to that whale and take more samples."

A third dead gray whale was then found in the Berkeley Marina this week, after moving around the bay on the changing tide. That animal was also towed to Angel Island and is currently being inspected near the remains of the first.

"Our team is actually split into two right now," Rulli says, as pathologists inspect and sample both animals at Muir Beach and Angel Island.

2019 also saw a rise in dead gray whales around the San Francisco water, though half of those animals' causes of death were ruled malnutrition, a cause that hasn't been yet been concluded for any of the four whales this week.

"These investigations are so critical, so we can find out why these animals are washing ashore dead and figure out how we can safely co-habitate in their ocean home," says Rulli. "This is an unusual mortality event for gray whales; we've seen increasing numbers of dead whales wash ashore over the last two years."

Human interaction, usually the form of ship strike or entanglement, is a frequent cause of whale death, though only one of the four this week has been ruled dead from that trauma.

The deaths have meant the Marine Mammal Center is facing one of their busiest times while prioritizing human health and safety because of COVID-19.

"Due to the pandemic, we're deploying smaller teams than normal, and these are 40-foot-plus whales, these investigations take hours," Rulli says. "It can take some time to figure out what's happening."

The increased deaths are not the only unusual whale activity in the San Francisco Bay this year. A humpback was spotted near Tiburon in the middle of March, something that's never happened so early in the year before.

The center urges any residents around the bay who spot more dead (or alive) whales to immediately report the sighting to the Marine Mammal Center.

"The data and investigation is so critical, so we can rule or rule out the cause being human interaction," Rulli said.
