Construction crews are breaking ground on one of the region's biggest highway construction projects in years, according to Caltrans.

The so-called "Fix 50 Project" will give a much-needed makeover to the heavily traveled section of Highway 50 between the Interstate 5 interchange and Watt Avenue.

A major highlight of the project will be the addition of high-occupancy vehicle, or HOV, lanes along the length of the project area.

A portion of Highway 50, between W and X streets, is comprised of elevated bridges.

The contractor, Flatiron Construction, will be building and connecting a third bridge between the east and westbound sides of the freeway to make room for the new HOV lanes.

"This is one of the largest projects in the Sacramento region, one of the largest projects we've seen in a very long time," said Angela DaPrato, spokesperson for Caltrans.

Crews will also be replacing the aging road with a new, continuously reinforced concrete pavement.

Decorative sound walls will also bring some noise relief to neighbors living along the freeway.

Light rail riders will also see some improvements with the addition of a second track along the Gold Line between Sunrise Boulevard and downtown Folsom.

Trains that now leave the station every 30 minutes will increase in frequency to every 15 minutes.

Because of the construction, some homeless people who had been living under Highway 50 along the W-X freeway have been relocated. Caltrans said they posted 72-hour notices Friday, and on Monday, crews started clearing the camps.
