Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones has tested positive for COVID-19, the sheriff's office confirmed Wednesday. This comes after months of him saying he would not enforce mask or curfew orders imposed by the state.

A release from the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office said that Jones developed COVID symptoms late last week "after a workplace exposure to an employee" who later tested positive for the virus.

Jones' symptoms — described by the sheriff's office as mild — included fever, congestion, light-headedness and a headache. The sheriff's office said that as of Wednesday afternoon, he had "almost no remaining symptoms."

"He is following the recommendations of health officials and will be quarantining. His entire immediate family has been tested and is awaiting results, and will also be quarantining," the release goes on to say.

Jones said in June that he would recommend people wear masks around high-risk groups or wherever required by Gov. Gavin Newsom's mask mandate, but he would not have his deputies enforce the order.

"However, due to the minor nature of the offense, the potential for negative outcomes during enforcement encounters, and anticipating the various ways in which the order may be violated, it would be inappropriate for deputies to criminally enforce the Governor's mandate," Jones said in the June release. "Accordingly, the Sheriff's Office will not be doing so."

The Wednesday release said that Jones is one of "dozens" of sheriff's office employees who have contracted the virus during the pandemic but did not provide a specific number.

On Tuesday, Sacramento County reported a record 1,115 new COVID cases, bringing the total of confirmed cases to nearly 40,000 since the start of the pandemic. Nearly 600 people have died, according to county data.
