In line with most things in 2020, this year’s Run to Feed the Hungry was met with unprecedented challenges.
The annual Thanksgiving event draws tens of thousands of people, and in turn, raises more than a million dollars yearly for the Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services.
And this year the need is especially great. But the silver living is people pivoting and rising above obstacles to help those in need.
On Thanksgiving Day, four churches in the Pocket-Greenhaven neighborhood organized Walk to Feed the Hungry with proceeds going towards Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services.
“We want to stand up and make sure the hungry in our community are fed,” organizer Rich Fowler said. “Even though we’re disappointed the 25,000 people aren’t gathering and walking together—which is a tradition that we love in Sacramento-- we’re going to do our part.”
Fowler said the roughly 500 people signed up for the event ahead of time and people could join and donate throughout the walk.
“The Pocket area churches together decided to serve our community in a way that meets the real needs of the community. And this year that means food,” Pastor Dan Walbert with Greenhaven Neighborhood Church said. “So, we partnered with the Sacramento Food Bank to meet those needs. A couple months ago the conversation started and to make sure it was COVID safe."
