The Davis City Council says it will restrict the use of leaf blowers when air quality is bad.

The city council had been asked to consider a ban on leaf blowers, due to the health impacts of airborne particulate matter and other pollutants in the air. On Thursday, the council decided that instead of a ban, it could declare an emergency and restrict their use when the air quality is unhealthy.

The restrictions would apply to gas and electric blowers on public and private property within city limits. Conditions that would result in leaf blower restrictions include: local AQI values exceeding 100 (unhealthy for sensitive groups), presence of wildfire ash and future air quality forecasts, according to a news release from the city.

The city will alert residents through its Everbridge Alert system when they can't use a leaf blower. It will also post the info on its website and is developing a webpage to let people know about air quality impacts.
