(KCRA3)Demonstrators took part in a solidarity rally outside Sacramento County Jail on Tuesday after two protesters were arrested over the weekend.

The rally happened as the two protesters were arraigned at the Sacramento County courthouse in connection to resisting arrest. Both were booked into custody overnight Saturday. A judge released both people following their court appearance.

Andrea Hart, 29, was arrested for pointing a laser at an officer, for weapons violations and resisting arrest. Christopher Hill, 36, was booked overnight Saturday by Sacramento police and charged with resisting officers and attempting to stop them from arresting Hart.

A couple dozen demonstrators with the Sacramento Anti-Repression Committee organized the rally, which began around 3 p.m. and dispersed by 4:45 p.m.

As a result of the rally, I Street between Seventh and Eighth streets was blocked off and a couple dozen deputies monitored the situation.

“Folks were just going to come on the corner and chant to let the folks inside know that we are here, and we love them,” organizer Mackenzie Wilson said. “Instead, we saw a repression tactic by the Sacramento (County) Sheriff’s Office that looks like a complete shutdown of the jail facility so nobody can visit their loved ones. We’ve seen armed riot gear on both sides of the street.”

Also on Tuesday, the National Lawyers Guild filed a complaint against the Sacramento Police Department arguing one of its officers used excessive force against another protester over the weekend.

Video of the incident was captured by a guild member.

Elizabeth Kim, with National Lawyers Guild Sacramento, said she witnessed the incident.

“This person shoved a young woman so hard that she hit the wall before hitting the ground. And then when she got up and proceeded to get his identification, he slapped her phone down causing it to crack on the ground,” Kim said. “When officers witnessed this, they did nothing. They have a duty to intervene and stop officers from committing assault and battery against any civilian.”

Sacramento police declined an interview about the complaint but released the following statement:

The department is committed to protecting the community’s first amendment rights and will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.”
