(KCRA3)As people try to keep their homes clean of wildfire smoke, one East Sacramento hardware store is getting cleaned out.

At East Sac Hardware on Folsom Boulevard, owner Sheree Johnston said there has been an influx of customers trying to get their hands on air filters because of recent wildfires.

The run on supplies is not unusual during wildfire season, but what is different now: a shortage of air filters. Johnston said her supply, and other stores’ supplies in the area, is running low because of distribution issues from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

“Instead of manufacturing filters, they’re manufacturing masks,” Johnston said. “So our whole distribution system is out of whack to begin with COVID-19. And now with the fires, it’s like the double whammy.”

With filters running low, Johnston is telling her customers to vacuum their current filters while they wait for more to arrive, get a bigger filter and cut it down or get small filters to double up.

“If you don’t really need a clean filter and you’re just stockpiling a few: Don’t do that, because people who actually need them who are immunocompromised, who are the elderly, leave them so that they can get it,” she said.

The store is monitoring how many filters people buy to prevent any single person from hoarding filters. Johnston is even holding back herself.

“I looked at mine, it’s embarrassing,” she said. “I’m not going to bring one home because we need to sell it to whoever may need it.”

Meanwhile, Mike Spellman, owner of Paul's Automotive -- an auto repair shop in Sacramento, is seeing more dirty air filters in cars too.

Spellman has not seen a shortage of filters for cars, but he warns drivers to be mindful this week amid unhealthy air quality.

“If the filters do break, they could create contaminants throughout the whole ventilation system that could be a costly repair of taking a lot of stuff apart just to clean it all out,” he said.

Normally, Spellman estimates people should change their car filter every 10,000 miles. But some signs you may need to switch it out beforehand include: a bad smell or dust in your car or if your air conditioning or heating system is not working properly.

Wildfire smoke can cause health issues ranging from itchy eyes and headaches to tightness in the chest and asthma attacks. Among other guidelines, the American Lung Association is stressing people keep their filters clean and stay inside as much as possible during wildfires.

“You can really see what smoke does to these pieces of equipment,” said Will Barrett with the American Lung Association. “It really speaks to the need to keep track of everything you can do to limit your exposures including properly maintaining those filtration systems.”
