(SFGATE)With dozens of wildfires burning around the greater Bay Area, smoke poured into the central region Tuesday and air quality levels deteriorated.

Many reported smelling smoke, including San Francisco residents, and the sooty conditions combined with hot temperatures and the COVID-19 pandemic made the world outside seem especially eerie.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District reported moderate air-quality in most regions Tuesday and at this level people who are sensitive to smoke are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activity. However, the Air District said that anyone who smells smoke outside should go indoors to limit exposure to unhealthy air.

The district has a Spare the Air Alert in effect today and Wednesday, and residents are banned from burning wood or manufactured logs. These alerts are issued when ozone or particulate matter pollution is forecast to reach unhealthy levels.

A series of three major fires are burning in Napa County and National Weather forecaster Steve Anderson said a massive plume of smoke could be seen rising above the North Bay. Major fires are also burning around Mount Diablo, and near Salinas, and a blaze in San Mateo County prompted evacuations Tuesday afternoon.

Anderson added that smoke will remain in the forecast until the fires calm.

Many of the blazes were sparked by lightning strikes on Monday and Sunday amid a rash of unusual summer thunderstorms in Northern California. The storm activity combined with a prolonged heatwave created ideal conditions for wildfires.

Cal Fire spokesperson Robert Foxworthy said Monday morning that in a 24 hour period there were nearly 1,600 lighting strikes and 76 wildfires (Read more about the extreme fire conditions on SFGATE).

Foxworthy said the region hasn't seen a situation like this since 2008 when rare thunderstorms led to similar extreme fire conditions.

Inland temperatures soared into the 100s Tuesday with Livermore reaching 104. With a light ocean breeze, the coast was slightly cooler and S.F. saw a high of 76.

Wednesday temperatures are forecast to be a tad cooler. "A little cooler, but not cool," Anderson said.
