Firefighters on Wednesday evening were trying to corral a fast-moving grass fire that burned about 700 acres in a rural area in southeast Sacramento County, Cal Fire officials said.

The Clay Fire was burning near Clay Station Road and Momtoma Lane in Wilton, about 13 miles east of Elk Grove, according to the Cal Fire Amador-El Dorado Unit. The fire was first reported shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the 9600 block of Clay Station Road.

Ground units and aircraft were “actively fighting this fire,” Cal Fire officials said about 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. They asked residents to stay away from the area. Officials said 173 firefighters were called to battle the grass fire.

At 7:20 p.m., Cal Fire officials said firefighters had made “great progress” and had stopped the fire’s forward progress. The Clay Fire was about 25% contained and officials said the threat to any buildings in the area had been reduced.

Authorities closed Katenta Lane, along with Clay Station and Momtoma. No buildings had been damaged as of 8:15 p.m. and no injuries had been reported, according to a Cal Fire news release.

Cal Fire officials said firefighters were expected to remain in the area, working late to gain full containment and put out any smoldering hot spots. Investigators had not determined the cause of the fire.
