Sacramento airport construction project gets $9.8 million federal grant

A construction project scheduled to start in September at Sacramento International Airport is getting nearly $10 million from the federal government, thanks in part to the CARES Act.

On Tuesday, the Federal Aviation Administration announced it would award more than $273 million in airport safety and infrastructure grants. Of that, $9.8 million is going to the Sacramento airport, to build a new aircraft rescue and firefighting building.

Funding for the grants includes $242 million from the Airport Improvement Program and $31 million from the CARES Act.

Grants were given in 41 states, the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories or associated states. The grant awarded to Sacramento was the largest in the state this grant round.

“The health and safety of our customers remains the highest priority for the Department of Airports," said Cindy Nichol, Sacramento County's director of airports, in a news release. “The new Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting Station will protect critical life-saving equipment from adverse weather conditions and it will ensure Sacramento International Airport continues to meet all FAA and County safety requirements.”

The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors awarded the $12 million construction project to Broward Builders Inc., of Woodland, at its meeting earlier this month.

According to airport spokesperson Samantha Mott, construction is estimated to begin in September and take just under one year.

The current firefighting building at the airport is 51 years old and the aging building requires extensive maintenance. It is also too small to support the modern, larger vehicles now used to respond if a fire breaks out at the airport.

The existing station also lacks space to store personal protective equipment out of the apparatus bay and away from diesel exhaust and other contaminants.

The CARES Act already set aside $10 billion in relief money to help U.S. airports get through the Covid-19 pandemic. Of that, $50 million came to the Sacramento airport, and was used to pay staff salaries and benefits, and for debt payments this April.
