The Sacramento Zoo is preparing to open its doors once again.

The zoo is set to reopen to the public Monday, June 15. New operating procedures, put in place to lower coronavirus exposure risk for guests, will be implemented.

The biggest change is that members and guests must now book their visit times/tickets, online, ahead of time. Tickets will not be sold at the door. Guests will also notice safety guidelines posted in front of the zoo and throughout the park itself.

"We have signs talking about staying 'within your own flock,' just like the flamingos do and staying safe by not touching the glass," said Jason Jacobs, director of Sacramento Zoo. "We have other signs talking about keeping 'an alligator-length away' from other groups -- 6 feet long, which is the size of some of our big gators -- now at the front of the zoo."

Zoo staff will be wearing masks, and guests are strongly encouraged to wear masks as well, although it's not required for entry. The zoo's janitorial team has stepped up the cleaning of high-touch areas. There's Plexiglas instead of netting around some of the animal enclosures for ease of cleaning. Although guests won't be able to touch or interact with some of the animals as they did before the outbreak through the zoo's interpretive programs, the zoo says there are so many animals guests can learn about during their visits.

"There's still a lot of animals to come out and see like parrots, our new alligators, our new female giraffe, the ostrich, the lion and old favorites -- chimpanzees and zebras -- so many great animals at the Sacramento Zoo, said Jacobs. "A lot of people don't realize, we're a nonprofit, so every dollar we bring in goes toward taking care of these fantastic animals."
