(KCRA)SACRAMENTO, Calif. —
California has seen an uptick of COVID-19 cases, with the reasons ranging from national holidays to countrywide protests, a Sacramento area health expert said.
Dr. Dean Blumberg, head of pediatric infectious diseases at the UC Davis Medical Center, said the spike in cases comes from a combination of sources, including activities on Mothers Day, Memorial Day, businesses reopening and protests to reopen the state.
" eople going out and about, and so we know we've had increased contacts among people and with this increased contact -- that facilitates transmission, of course," Blumberg said.
California coronavirus cases increased by 36,000 since Memorial Day weekend. Half of those cases come from last week alone. The number of cases in Sacramento County has increased by more than 180 cases.
Officials said increased testing and contact tracing may also account for some of the rise in numbers.
Some counties have, however, expressed concern because of the statewide uptick in cases.
San Joaquin County officials said it "already had increases prior to the protests from people relaxing and businesses opening." Officials expect a bump in case numbers related to protests but said they hope it's not a large one.
Blumberg said the scenario health care workers want to avoid is a surge big enough to fill up ICUs to the point where there's no capacity for ventilators.
"We want to make sure people that get sick that health care systems are going to be available to be able to take care of them," Blumberg said.
Blumberg said the cases reported in recent weeks have not yet stemmed from people protesting the police custody death of George Floyd.
"Any change that we make today, you're not going to see a difference in the number of cases tomorrow. It's going to take two, four weeks to actually see that," Blumberg said.
Statistics for COVID-19 in each county show half of the cases for both Sacramento and San Joaquin counties come from the 18-49 age group. Still, the largest concentration of cases comes from the vulnerable populations in nursing homes and care facilities.
If people must socialize, Blumberg said it is always better to do it outdoors, even with dining. Public health guidelines, such as wearing a mask and maintaining distance, will also help curb the possibility of another surge in cases.
